Many parents ask how they can get their child involved in robotics. At Brandywine Robotics, we offer two exciting programs for young roboteers from grades 4 through 12:
Grades 4 through 6: Students can join our VEX IQ program, which is tailored to younger learners.
Grades 6 through 12: Students participate in the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC). Within this, grades 6 through 8 are in the Middle School division, and grades 9 through 12 are in the High School division.
The Vexmen is a parent-run organization, and each team of 4–5 roboteers needs at least two parent mentors. This means your involvement is crucial! The Vexmen is not a drop-off program; it requires active participation from parents. The role of a mentor is to guide and support the team, and no prior technical experience is required. If you can handle basic tasks like using a screwdriver and measuring with a tape measure, you’re equipped to help build a VEX robot. We will provide the necessary training for the rest.
Having an engineering or programming background is a bonus, but not necessary. The primary responsibilities of a parent mentor include managing the project, ensuring the team stays on track, gathering parts, and keeping the students motivated. Two mentors per team are essential for child safety, ensuring no one gets lost, hurt, or left idle. Your guidance and support will be key to the team’s success and an enriching experience for your child.
